The wheel locked up because one of the ball-bearings went bad or something (dirt, grit, etc.) got in with the bearings. Due to physics that specific ball-bearing popped out or was forced out to relieve stress on the system. The wheel will still function missing just one bearing albeit now as well. You may notice it being more difficult to move.
